Herbie Hancocks Harmonik in The Sorcerer
Three selected Hancock recordings of his composition “The Sorcerer” are being compared on the basis of detailled transcriptions with regard to their harmonic. The recordings are from the years 1967, 1968 and 2001. Beside Hancock’s soli there are also theme choruses (all instruments except drums) as well as the improvisations of Wayne Shorter and Miles Davis from the 1967 recording which have been transcribed. The harmonic analyses show the reharmonization techniques used by the individual musicians, and in which way Hancock creates the impression of harmonic modernity in his 2001 recording.
