Beiträge von ECM-Bassisten
zur Weiterentwicklung des europäischen Jazz
After a short introduction dealing with the idea of “European Jazz” the author engages in explanations of the definition of a new historic style in jazz history, the “ECM-style”. At the beginning two of the three general characteristics “emotional content”, “simplicity, economy and repetition” and “sound” are illustrated by sound- and scoresamples and analytical comments. In further progress of this presentation transcriptions of selected pieces and bass lines also provide the basis of consideration. “Specific characteristics” of the new style are shown by means of the bass players C. Haden, Bjørn Kellemyr and Barre Phillips (“slow harmonic rhythm” / “triad harmony”, “broader spacious feeling of melody” and the relation to traditional occidental music). The components “rhythm”, “form”, “dynamics”, “colour of sound” and the use of “ostinati/vamps” are touched and summarized in the conclusion, using sound samples and transcriptions of the players and composers G. Peacock and E. Weber.
